By Coffee Fan
This Bissell Powerclean Multi Cyclonic has a lot going for it but one thing it really struggles with is accommodating carpets and rugs of varying types. The wheels that control the ride height of the brush head are too small, the roller brush has short, very stiff bristles and is driven by a separate motor that bogs down easily. All this combines to make the Powerclean very sensitive to the density and pile height of the carpet. If your home has several carpet types or rugs you need to vacuum then don't buy this model unless you enjoy constantly reaching down to adjust the carpet height setting.Ergonomics and handling aren't great either. It's a bit hefty, the rubber rear wheels are a hindrance on carpet and the handle has to be lowered almost all the way to the floor to lift up the front end.On the plus side the dual stage cyclone system seems to do a good job capturing fine particles and dust which should keep HEPA filter changes to a minimum. Overall build quality seems pretty good, the dirt canister assembly appears to stay well sealed. The accessory hose and power cord are fairly long but not so long as to be a nuisance. The ability to turn off the roller brush is nice bit it appears to come at a price.A word about "suction". This model can develop relatively high vacuum pressure at zero flow. That's good for lifting bowling balls (Oreck commercial) and seems impressive when you stick the accessory hose against your hand, but it's not what cleans carpets. To pull the dirt from the floor and into the vacuum cleaner you need air flow and the more air you move the harder it is to maintain vacuum pressure. Without going into an overly detailed explanation of how vacuum cleaners work, it should suffice to say that under typical operating conditions, this Bissell has about as much "suction" as my old $70 Hoover with a fresh bag. It's adequate, but not astonishing. To be fair I should note that my old Hoover doesn't provide anything near the level of filtration that the Bissell does.

By walleyeslayer
We'd been looking for several months for a vacuum to replace an Electrolux we purchased several years ago for $700 when we came across this Bissell on sale at Kohl's for $139. We have a long haired dog who sheds a lot so we wanted a vacuum to pick up dog hair for sure. We liked the initial construction when we looked at the vacuum in the store and after reading several pretty positive reviews we decided to try it. We've had it now for a month, have used it extensively, and what a deal it turned out to be so far.The first thing we noticed about the vacuum is that it has outstanding suction and picks up everything compared to the much more expensive Electrolux! We have mostly carpets and some tile and going from one to the other was a breeze. We also have two sets of carpeted stairs that we use a lot and attachments with it worked great on those. You do need to be sure to always reseat the hose firmly in its carrying position after using it so the vacuum suction is redirected to the floor rollers. The amount of dog hair the vacuum picked up (that we thought our Electrolux was getting) was astounding. Also it is very efficient at getting the fine stuff as well. It is really remarkable how well it works on our carpets (short pile). Because of the "dirt" our previous vac had missed we ended up emptying the canister several times the first time we used it, and discovered how easy it was to do so. We also like the fact that all of the accessories remain with the vacuum and out of the way.Our impression is the Bissell 16N54 is sturdy, easy to use and move around, and gets the job done for a reasonable price - what more can you ask for when buying a vacuum? Time will tell how well it lasts, but for now we couldn't be more pleased with this vacuum.Update 26 Dec 2011 We'd buy this again in a heartbeat - what a great piece of equipment. This removes so much dog hair and dirt that one has to be careful to empty it frequently, but I'm not complaining. Our carpets and floors have never been so clean. We continue to be extremely pleased with this vacuum - it appears Bissell did things right with this one!Update 19 Dec 2012 This vacuum continues to amaze us. We use it a lot with no problems at all. We highly recommend.Update 25 March 2013 We have used this extensively over the last two months at two houses with a long haired dog resident and it is a tremendous workhorse and does a fantastic job. We hope it never quits!!!!

By Rabidreader
This vacuum does a great job of picking up massive amounts of cat hair and fine dirt on the carpet. I've had this vacuum for several months, and each time I vacuum I'm astonished at how much cat hair it picks up. (I'm surprised the cat has any hair left--it seeems to all be in the Bissell.) The only problem I had with it was due to operator error. I couldn't make the roller brush work. Turns out there's a clearly marked button on the handle. Duh! I don't know when I'd ever operate it without the roller brush working, but if I ever choose to turn it off, there's a button. The filtration system also works great. I'm allergic to cats (love them anyway) and am so glad the dander and hair is sucked up with no dust being stirred up or exhaled into the room. This vacuum isn't the most maneuverable thing and it is heavy, if that matters to you. But I don't mind working with it a little to get around the furniture and I use the hose attachment for those days when I'm really motivated and want to vacuum tight against the wall. All in all, it works better than I do.
