5finally- NO lines in carpet!
By Chel Micheline
I'm a neat freak. I also have three cats, three birds, a husband who works from home, and a six-year-old. So, needless to say, I've gone through a lot of vacuums. I now have a Dyson, but it's a bit of a bear at times, and to be honest, I'm not always sure it does such a great job on my carpets.I have to admit, when I tried the Panasonic, I couldn't tell the immediate difference. I called in my mom, another neat freak (she's taught me all my tricks) and she wanted to give it a whirl. She loves to vacuum. I know that sounds weird to non-vacuumers, but it's her thing. She LOVED this vacuum. LOVED it. This woman has test drove or owned every vacuum on the market and she was absolutely thrilled with the Panasonic. Her take:- It's little easier to handle, but not so lightweight that it's flimsy.- The attachments are on board and easy to pull out and us.- The long, retractable cord is GREAT. No more extension cords and having to wrap up miles of cord after vacuuming. Much easier to pull out for quick pick ups.- Moves around great and glides on solid floors (she's got hardwood, I have bamboo laminate).- This was a HUGE thing for her: does NOT leave tracks on carpet. I have sort of a medium nubby carpet (which LOVES bird seed) and she's got a high pile carpet and she loved the way it glided over the carpet easily, sucking everything up but not leaving tracks all over the place.- The way the vacuum is built is that it's sort of tilted down- the "nose" of the vacuum is pointed towards the floor and the back is elevated a bit so it's sort of rolls easier but still is in a position to really deep clean.- Finally, the color- it's a beautiful color. I wish someone would make a vacuum in a beautiful blue....Overall, this was a hit. It's easy to handle, but not flimsy. It's well engineered. It's got features that Mr. Dyson needs to look into (retractable cord, softer wheels, tilted forward nose). So this was a win for us.

3Durability Lacking
By Katherine Chan
UPDATE:I'm no longer feeling the love for the Panasonic Jet Force. While it still vacuums well (that can is still getting filled, so that's a good thing), the signs of the overall durability of this vacuum are beginning to show...and it's not a pretty sight. First off, the brush mechanism of the vacuum is beginning to make a "clicking" noise. I thought something got caught in there, so I tried to take off the bottom so I could clean off the brush mechanism. To my surprise, you cannot open or clean the brush mechanism. With the Dyson, the unit is completely detachable for easy cleaning. Because I can live with a little noise, I carried on. Not too long after that, I noticed the vacuum started sounding louder - almost as if it's working a LOT harder to suck. Again, not a huge issue, considering vacuums are loud, I can live with that.I cannot live with the fact that the brushes still spin while the unit is standing upright though. On my old Dyson, if I was using the hose attachment, the brushes would stop spinning if the unit was standing upright (ie, not vacuuming). Heck, anytime the vacuum is upright and on, the brushes will not spin. With the Panasonic, those brushes still are spinning away. I used to think this wasn't a big deal up until one day when I was using the hose, the vacuum tipped over. To my shock, the brushes caught onto the cord and with a screeching whir and burning plastic, part of the cord outer covering was sheared off. This happened all within 2 seconds, well before my reaction time to turn off the vacuum kicked in. The metal wires within the cord were thankfully not hit, but the outside of the cord was cut open. Now, if my kids happened to be by, can you imagine what would happen if FINGERS were near by? Now I understand why Dyson included that "stop brush" feature. Someone had noted that you can turn off the brushes in "bare floor cleaning mode", but how many people actually would think to turn the vacuum to bare mode before using the hose attachment? That's just not intuitive. Thumbs down, Panasonic. I've since electrical taped over the dinged spot to cover the metal components of the wire. The cord still retracts fine. Dyson - I'm beginning to miss you dearly. To add insult to injury, last night while vacuuming, the corner of my vacuum bumped up against my kid's dresser while on the back sweep, then PING! The corner purple trim of the vacuum got caught on the dresser and popped right off. You got to be kidding me. The decorative trim is adhered to the vacuum by small plastic pieces that are essentially "plugged in" on the main part of the vacuum. Now I have one corner of that long purple strip going around the front of the vacuum sticking out. My vacuum still works fine, but wow, it's starting to look ghetto now. And as many people mentioned in their reviews, the concern about the hose not staying in the unit is warranted. I use the hose a lot, and sometimes, the hose will not stay put in the holder. This is a problem because if it's not plugged into the holder, you'll be vacuuming, but the bits will not go into the canister. I've vacuumed a few times where the hose popped off mid vacuum. Grrrrr. [As of Feb. 9, 2013, the plastic trim broke off. It actually looks better without the trim dangling there, so at least it looks less ghetto.]My Dyson was well over 10 years old, and the only sign of its age is the powdery look inside the canister from all the vacuuming, and a few cosmetic scratches from bumps and from moves. This Panasonic still looks shiny on the outside, but with plastic pieces danging off...ugh, no love there. All in all, after using it for a few months, I probably wouldn't recommend it for a heavy duty user like us. When it works, it still works well, but with all these little problems coming to light, the design and long term durability of the Dyson really is becoming apparent. I will update again in a year (or if more problems arise). As it stands, I wouldn't recommend this vacuum if you can afford something better. You may have to end up replacing this vacuum sooner than you'd think.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Being a long time, 100% advocate, and die hard Dyson fan, I would turn my nose up at anything less than the Bugatti of vacuum cleaner world. In fact, I'm still a die hard Dyson fan, although I'm beginning to soften a bit - the Panasonic Jet Force Bagless Vacuum is actually pretty good for cost. I'm doing a comparison to my much older Dyson DC14 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner, keeping in mind that Dysons today are probably much lighter and better than what I currently have.1. Assembly: I can't do an accurate comparison, as it's been about 10 years since I've assembled my Dyson fresh from box. That said, the Panasonic is very easy to set up - it takes one screw to attach the handle to the main unit, and you just need to remove the packaging tape to get going. Both the Dyson and the Panasonic break down easily for cleaning. Tie!2. Weight: The first thing I noticed when I started using the Panasonic is that this thing is incredibly light! My old Dyson literally gave me a workout - it's a work horse with tons of attachments, super sucking power, but weighed a LOT. The Panasonic was so light that I finished vacuuming a lot sooner than I thought. There is about a 10 lb difference between my Dyson and the Panasonic. Today's Dysons are still about 4-5 lbs heavier. I would go with Panasonic if you don't like to struggle with heavier vacuums - those 5 lbs really make a difference if you have a lot to vacuum. Panasonic for the win!3. Cleaning: The Panasonic does pretty well in the cleaning power department, although I don't think it sucks up as much as the Dyson. This is really debatable because the crap level in the carpets vary from day to day and room to room. Just from what I saw, it does suck up a lot of stuff though. Honestly, I wouldn't be able to tell if my husband used the Panasonic or the Dyson on the carpet. Both do a really nice job of getting the carpets clean, and both are fairly quick about it. Both vacuums come with HEPA filters. Tie with Panasonic/Dyson.4. Attachments and Overall Design: The big difference between the Panasonic and Dyson comes in the form of the attachments and canister. The Dyson's canister is almost twice the size of the Panasonic. While the Panasonic is light, it loses a lot when you have to empty the canister that often. Also, the suction wand design is just begging for improvement. The wand plugs into the vacuum, and needs to be pulled out in order to use. This seems to fine now, but it may wear down and get loose over time. With the Dyson, you pull the wand out and up from the handle, so you can hold the handle to suck things up. You can also remove the wand from the Dyson entirely. Also, the wand on the Panasonic is very short. I hate having to bend over to vacuum those bigger chunks off the floor. The Telescope Reach wand on the Dyson rocks. I don't use the attachments all too often, so both the Dyson and Panasonic seem fine. The biggest issue with the cleaning is the actual dumping of the contents of the canister. With the Dyson, you push a button on the top of the canister and don't even come close to touching any of the crap in the container. I've never gotten my hands sullied by dirt or dust. With the Panasonic, you need to pull the lid on the bottom of the canister off with your other hand to dump the contents. This is just asking for crap on your hands, crap on the floor if you don't aim low enough into your garbage can, and just yuck! This is not a deal breaker on buying the Panasonic, but just keep in mind that it can be a mess if you empty the thing incorrectly. Dyson for the win on the overall design and bigger crap canister.5. Cord Length & Conveniences: This seems like a silly category, but my husband insisted. I use my vacuum a lot - so much, in fact, that I leave the thing in the kitchen most of the time with the cord just hanging around (we have 2 preschoolers...it gets crunchy around here a lot and I can't handle it). He hates it because the cord on the Dyson is very VERY long - so long that I can plug it into one particular outlet in our kitchen/family room and reach every room in our house, including 4 bedrooms and living room. With a cord this long, it took a while to ravel up and put away. The Panasonic's cord is much shorter. I have to go from room to room unplugging the unit to vacuum each room. This bugs me because I have to stop, unplug, then replug into another room to vacuum. The saving grace is that the vacuum cord on the Panasonic can be put away by just a push of a button...the cord will retract itself. How long this will last, I don't know - hopefully it's pretty durable. I personally like the Dyson because I can vacuum the whole house even if I have to work a little to put the cord away, but my husband loves the Panasonic because the cord retracts and gets put away immediately and he doesn't mind plugging in the vacuum room to room. This is a tie because this depends on your preference. All in all, the Panasonic is a good vacuum cleaner that gets all the hair and crap in your carpets sucked up. If you're willing to invest in a Dyson, I would say "go for it" simply because it's super durable (mine is 10 years old and still working fabulously) and the little add ons are really great. However, if you're on a budget or have a smaller place, the Panasonic will do the job just fine. Without putting Dyson into consideration in the review, I would say that the Panasonic is solid vacuum that does really well and you can't go wrong. I'll post in a year to update on durability. Until then, Highly Recommended!Final Note: When I first used the Panasonic, a weird plasticky smell came from the vacuum. It was so strong, in fact, that the whole room smelled like plastic when I was done. It has since faded, but be aware that the smell will take about a week to go away (from the vacuum). I don't recall the Dyson having that plastic funk, but hey, it's been 10 years, remember.

4Nice Vacuum For The Price... But A Few Drawbacks
By Molly P.
Yay, a purple vacuum! Let's talk about the good & the bad.Good:*Strong suction... quite powerful*Bagless system; dumping the dirt is easy*Nice tools for different types of cleaning, and convenient storage ON the vacuum unit for these tools*Internal cord storage*Quieter than my old vacuum by a few decibels*Lighter weight than my old vacuum, though still a bit cumbersome*Doesn't tip over easilyBad:*No "headlight" for vacuuming in dark corners*The cord does not automatically extend when you need it to. Kind of a pain, that.*Powerful suction is not friendly on certain surfaces. Avoid tasseled rugs!*Optional tools are tricky to clean, especially when they've sucked up a lot of hair*The hose is too short and makes vacuuming my stairs a tricky task. (I may buy an extension.)*When trying to extend the flexible hose, sometimes instead of extending, it just ends up pulling the vacuum unit along with you. Nooo.Overall, a nice vacuum for the price. The Pros slightly outweigh the Cons. If I were to recommend a vacuum to someone, I would ask that person what features were important to them (hose length, headlight, etc.) when considering whether or not to get THIS particular model.
