Bought this vacuum on sale, so that helped out. I never thought I would have spent so much on a vacuum! Bought a Eureka pet model vacuum last year, and it was the WORST vacuum purchased. Did not pick up much, and ended up picking things like lose carpet fibers by hand. The Dyson vacuum was easy to put together. Snaps easily together. No screw driver needed! Started up the Dyson DC40, and after working in a small area picked up more dirt and pet hair than my fairly new vacuum did. We were shocked to see how much dirt this baby pulled up! Vacuum moves nicely around and under furniture. I know other people have mentioned their dislike of the cord, stating it's too low. I noticed it is low, but I hooked the beginning of it on the top red cord loop and seemed to work out fine for me. Others have also mentioned that they thought the cord was too short. I think it would be a pain to have it longer than it is, it's fine for me.Dyson also makes it easy to find and clear your blockages if needed. Instructions give clear pictures of where to find your problem area on the DC40, and have made the brush assembly easy to release from the body to clear anything out of that. Amazing they have a 5 year warranty too!

I just got this vacuum yesterday. It was painful to spend that much money on a vacuum, and I was a bit wary about whether or not I just got ripped off. Let's just say that you get what you pay for on this vacuum. I had already vacuumed my entire house with my old vacuum, and on the first room I cleaned, filled up the entire canister! I could not believe the difference! It was like I got new carpets installed. I got in a vacuum frenzy. I vacuumed my entire house and was shocked and awed by how much dirt and dust I have been living with all this time. My house now smells better and looks AMAZING! I then got so excited that I vacuumed my couch and I could not believe how much dust it got out of that!! Then I moved on to all my other upolstered furniture. Beware, this makes it look so clean, that I then had to clean everything else. I started noticing all the dust on my furniture and everything else that had smudges, because my carpet was soooo clean.Onto how the thing works. It is very easy to put together. It is pretty intuitive, but in case you need help, the instructions make it very easy. Took me about 5-10 minutes to assemble. When you vacuum there is a little hairbrush type thing on it that spins. When you vacuum hard floors you can have the brush stop spinning so it does not scratch the floors. It is very lightweight and not very loud, which worried me at first because I initially thought this thing looked pretty weak. Do not be fooled, I don't know how, but it has major sucking power. It has several attachments. One is a tiny little version of the vacuum clean - it has a tiny brush in it that you could use in small places. This proved ideal for doing my furniture, stairs, etc. It also has a long extension handle and another brush attachment you can use if you want to vacuum high up places. It is VERY easy to clean. I was amazing how easy it was to get to all of the parts. The canister empties from the bottom to let out all the dust, but you can also open the top so you can completely get everything out. There is also a filter in the canister and the ball. Dyson recommends that you wash this out with water once a month and let it dry, but said nothing about replacing it. I have only had it one day, so we will see how that holds up. You can also easily get to the brushes on the vacuum and attachment to clean that out - I got so much stuff in there (hair, etc), that I did it after each room. Hopefully now that my house is FINALLY clean it will not be so bad in the future. This is a good investment, but I have only had it for 24 hours now. It says it has a 5 year warranty. It is very easy to maneuver and shocking light and quiet.

By Yeah, that's me
I purchased this after getting frustrated trying to find the right bag for the 5 year old hand-me-down vacuum I'd been using. The thing hadn't been working well anyways. I have used the Dyson DC25 (my mom's) and loved the handling of it, so I was looking at Dyson when I found this at a store with a $120 off coupon. I live in a small apartment with one very fluffy little shedder, and I was completely disgusted the first time I used this...not by the performance, but by the fact that I had to empty the bin twice! SO. MUCH. HAIR. What a testament to the "suckiness" of this Dyson Animal. I actually had fun vacuuming. The Good:The bin snaps on and off easily and dumps into the trash easily as well, provided you don't stuff it to the brim. The coil design on the hose is genius. Stands upright when together, but flexes easily when pulled out.Attachments snap on and off quickly and easily.Ability to switch between carpet and hardwood floors requires a simple press of a button.Pretty small for a vacuum, which makes for easy storage.Great handling; putting it together and using it is a breeze.Great suction; the battle of the fur is over. And I won.The only reason I give this 4 stars is the cord. For being such an innovative piece of equipment, WHY WHY WHY does this thing NOT have a retractable cord?
